Case Study: MedaPoint Migrates Healthcare SaaS Portal to AWS Cloud

MedaPoint is a healthcare software firm that specializes in the field of Emergency Medicine Services (EMS), a complex industry with many key stakeholders including patients, 911 dispatchers, ambulance drivers, EMS clinicians, hospitals, and insurance companies. MedaPoint’s Advance One is the first Software-as-a-Service product that provides one comprehensive platform to manage dispatch, ambulance fleet routing via GPS, patient tracking, and insurance claims.

When Ray Chase, VP of Technology at MedaPoint, decided to migrate  Ray Advance One to Amazon Web Services (AWS), he turned to Logicworks for expertise in HIPAA compliant cloud computing. “In the field of healthcare software, maintaining security and governance is critical,” says Chase “We depend on Logicworks to ensure that our systems are HIPAA compliant and client data is protected.” Indeed, MedaPoint’s rapid growth has led to a considerable scope in terms of medical record management. Founded in 2009, MedaPoint now supports more than 1,500 private and municipal EMS providers in the United States.

The engineers at Logicworks custom-build architectures that meet specific technical, governance, and agility goals. For MedaPoint these goals included the security to protect Protected Health Information (PHI), cost savings, and the flexibility to roll out new features quickly using DevOps automation. Logicworks built a cloud-based infrastructure on AWS that achieved these principles, and helped MedaPoint to migrate the Advance One application. Once systems were live, Logicworks provided ongoing Managed Services like monitoring, security incident management, and disaster recovery.  

“The full set of solutions provided by Logicworks is pretty amazing,” says Chase. Logicworks provides a cost savings dashboard, compliance & security tools, and a portal where MedaPoint can interact with support engineers. “When I have an issue, I open a ticket and it’s magically resolved.”

The next phase of the project will be to expand MedaPoint’s DevOps capabilities so that they can spin up and down entire environments at the click of a button. Logicworks plans to use AWS tools like CloudFormation and Service Catalog to allow MedaPoint to create or destroy an entire network of testing infrastructure in real-time. As EMS departments across the country seek out the next generation of tools to support an aging population, MedaPoint is poised to lead the industry with their innovation in cloud-based healthcare software.
